Stop Cancer by Slimming Down

According to researchers, obesity related cancer is set to become our biggest challenge in the decades ahead because of the worsening state of our weight in most western countries around the world. Generally on average, we are getting fatter. And the research is clear: beat cancer by losing weight.

Researchers found that with thirty European countries, endometrial cancer, bowel cancer and breast cancer especially for postmenopausal women, account for some sixty-five per cent of all cancers attributable to weight excess. Dr Andrew Renehan, senior cancer lecturer and study author at the University of Manchester in the United Kingdom, has a very direct message. "Obesity related cancer is a greater problem for women than for men."

The message is clear. If you put a tape measure around the narrowest part of your waist and you are more than 80centremeters or more, you are in the increased health risk category. Knowledge is power so by knowing this it is now possible to look at ways of changing your life for the better and reducing your personal risk.

So how do we make a change to help lower the risks of cancer and other diseases?
Well possibly this solution is one of the all time best ways: eat five serves of vegetables (and legumes) and two serves of fruit per day.

You see people with diets high in legumes, fruit and vegetables have a lower risk of a host of the world’s worst diseases and conditions. Lower your chance of stroke, most major cancers, type 2 diabetes, hypertension and coronary heart disease.

Is it really that easy? The researchers think so. Just eat five serves of vegetable, legumes including legumes and two serves of fruit per day. That’s all it took according to researchers to get a significant advantage in your health and to reduce risk dramatically.

And to take your eating of fruits, legumes and vegetables to another level – go for a mixed bag for a far healthier advantage. The best way to do this is to eat a variety of colours with your fruit and vegetables. Eating five apples for example, does not give the same benefits as eating apples, oranges, corn, broccoli and carrots. There are more minerals, vitamins and antioxidants in the added variety.

Imagine if society could heed this one critical piece of advice and act upon it. Imagine what a difference this might make to our collective health and to our lives.
